June Is Busting Out All Over!
June 26, 2008
No, not June Allyson (seen here with dreamy Peter Lawford in “Good News”).
My Garden.
I’m finally getting my garden to grow. It’s actually just out on our front patio, but after about 3 months i’m finally seeing results! Yay! The first time i’ve ever grown vegetables (and fruits).
Last week Ted and I ate the first ripe Patio tomato– and it was Dee-licious. Here’s the story of my tomato in pictures–as you can see, the story ends with our lovely tomato being sacrificed on a fresh chicken salad.
We also now have yellow teardrop tomatoes
Just one nearly ripe teardrop tomato but as you can see we have several more on the way.
Salads for everyone!
And… we have Cayenne Peppers growing
Hot, right?!
Ok, since i’m a novice green thumb does anyone know:
1.When should I pick the Cayenne Pepper/s and what should I do with them?
2. Should I get those ‘cage’ thingys for my sprawling, out of control tomato plants?
3. What other vegetables and fruits are easy to grow? (i’m kind of having fun with this!).

Yes-get the ‘cage’ things.
Picking your peppers depends on when and how you want to use them. I pick them when they are red and sometimes dry some and then put them in a spice bottle to use. Also, i sometimes make a garland or small wreath of dried peppers. I start a needle and thread and keep adding them as they are ready and of course, hang them somewhere.
We grow-yellow tomatoes, two types of ‘big’ tomatoes and mini millions which are a form of cherry tomato. Other fun things to grow that compliment your tomato plants-herbs-like basil, thyme (i like to have a few going-lemon thyme smells good), rosemary has a nice shape and smell.
Also, we grow beans and snap peas-yummy! Actually this is all from Brynn’s garden. Now that we have moved the garden has to have a deer fence around it but so far it’s going very well. Oh, we also grow watermelons (well, we try) and pumpkins!!!!

I don’t know much about cayenne peppers (I grew jalepeno), but I will suggest that you use disposable rubber gloves when cutting them. I had a traumatizing jalepno pepper incident which involved me scratching my eye hours after cutting and washing my hands. I’ve been as gloved as Michael Jackson since.
I would do a few herbs. A nice basil would go well with the tomatoes. Not the spicy thai basil, but italian basil. Then all you need is a hunk of mozzarella and you can either make a yummy summer sandwich or an antipasto appetizer. Or you can make a homemade pesto sauce which trumps anything you would find prepared at the market.
